Based on the square footage of your home, an HVAC professional will recommend a certain amount of tonnage, or capacity, for your air conditioning system. Being over capacity means you paid too much upfront on the cost of your system when a smaller system would have done the job more efficiently. On the other hand, being under capacity means your system is working too hard and driving up your electricity bill, or certain areas of your house aren’t receiving cool air. This is why it’s important to have a certified expert analyze your home and recommend the correct capacity.
What it Costs
Using our air conditioning savings calculator below, you can find out how much money a True Healthy Air system will save you.
Factors That Impact Your Air Conditioner’s Health
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures how efficiently your system heats or cools your home. The higher the SEER rating, the better the energy efficiency and savings on your electric bill. The age of your system affects this rating because a typical system loses efficiency as it ages. This is why it’s important to have a higher SEER rating to start with so as your system ages, it still can cool and heat efficiently. Currently, the federally regulated minimum SEER rating for an air conditioner is 13 or 14 depending on where you live. But a professional will analyze the size of your new system, how long you anticipate living in your home, your regional climate and how often you expect to use your AC to make the final recommendation on the SEER rating.
MERV + HEPA
The Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rates the overall effectiveness of air filters. The higher the MERV rating, the finer the filtration. This means fewer dust particles and other airborne contaminants pass through a filter with a higher MERV rating. For those with severe allergies and respiratory problems, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters fit the bill. They will range from 17 to 20 MERV, which removes at least 99.97% of airborne particles. Installing an air conditioning system with the proper capacity, a high SEER rating, and including a HEPA certified filter will help your system last longer and perform better.
